PillCam No Match for Conventional Screening

When it comes to colon cancer screening, it's probably best to stick with the tried and true. In comparing a tiny camera that is swallowed like a pill against colonoscopy, researchers found the pill camera, called PillCam, was not as effective.

Results of the comparison of these two colon cancer screening methods, which are published in the New England Journal of Medicine, demonstrated that the PillCam missed 26% of the tumors found in patients also screened with colonoscopy. The PillCam failed to pick up about 25% of the polyps and adenomas larger than a quarter of an inch as well. This is a problem because if left untreated, adenomas may develop into cancer.

The Best Screening Option

Until the PillCam technology improves, as it undoubtedly will, stick with conventional colon cancer screening methods, such as colonoscopy, to keep yourself healthy and colon cancer free. You may be disappointed with this news, because most people don't relish the thought of getting a colonoscopy, but don't let your fear prevent you from undergoing this life-saving procedure.

Many people feel that colon cancer screening is embarrassing, but this is a myth. After all, this procedure is the same one that your own doctors and nurses use to keep themselves healthy. There is nothing embarrassing about taking charge of your health and a vital part of that is cancer screening.

You can demystify the colon cancer screening process as well, which is an important way to remove the fear and anxiety around the test. With a little knowledge, you too can learn how not to dread a colon cancer screening exam.
