Coffee and Colon Cancer: Enjoy Your Cup of Joe

Coffee is claimed to cause all manner of woes. From heart problems to cancer, it seems everyone has heard something negative about coffee. Should you be limiting how much coffee you drink?

Fortunately, when it comes to colon cancer, the answer is no. You may lose sleep from having too much caffeine, but you shouldn't lose any sleep worrying about coffee causing colon cancer.

The latest research on this topic followed over 60,000 Finish men and women for an average of 18 years each. This is a great group of people for coffee studies, because Finnish people do love their coffee.

Lots of Coffee, No More Colon Cancer Cases

After 18 years of follow-up, the researchers found that even for people drinking 10 or more cups of coffee per day, there was no increased risk of colon cancer.

Not a License to Guzzle Coffee

I don't advise that people drink 10+ cups of coffee per day. There may be other problems with this much coffee. Aside from being in the bathroom 25 times per day, 10 cups of coffee can make it difficult to sleep at night. Large amounts of coffee may give some people serious jitters and anxiety. Too much coffee can cause a rapid heart beat in some people too, which is not a good thing.

But you can feel better knowing that a few cups of coffee per day won't increase your risk of colon cancer. Just remember that a cup is 8 ounces. You may be having several cups at once. At 20 ounces, a venti size coffee is two and a half cups, or two and a half servings.
