Advice Column
In the advice column, I respond to questions about screening, symptoms, interacting with family members, and more. Feel free to browse the advice column and send your own question to coloncancer.guide@about.com. Please remember that I'm not a medical professional. I offer my advice as a neighbor, a friend, sitting at the kitchen table talking about what's on your mind and trying to help if I can.

Why's My Friend Bothering to Have Chemo?
My friend has stage 4 melanoma that started as a spot on his back and spread to his lymph nodes, and then to his liver and stomach. He is undergoing chemo and I believe interferon inpatient. Why would the doctors want him to undergo all that chemo if he only has a few more months to live?

Should I Agree to a Colonoscopy After a Negative FOBT?
I'm a male, age 46, in excellent health. A recent blood test revealed that I was slightly anemic. My doctor ordered a fecal occult test (FOBT), which came back negative. Still, my doctor recommends a colonoscopy. For the average person, does it make sense to do a colonoscopy if you're slightly anemic but your FOBT is negative?
