Accomplice Helps Cancer Cells Escape

Researchers have identified a protein that seems to help cancer cells survive when they spread to other parts of the body. Since the protein (periostin) is normally produced by bone cells, researchers were surprised to find high levels of it in colon cancer cells that had spread to the liver.

After further study, they discovered that periostin helps colon cancer cells endure harsh conditions. It also induces the growth of blood vessels that help nurture new tumors by supplying oxygen and nutrients.

Scientists hope that by studying how this protein helps new tumors survive, they'll be able to identify the most crucial aspects of the process and then mess them up. Doing so could potentially prevent colorectal cancer from spreading to the liver.
