Cancer Treatments

There are so many cancer treatments it can be hard to choose which one is right for you. Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and alternative cancer treatments are all options for people with colon and rectal cancer. If you're looking for detailed information about cancer treatment options, this is a good place to start.
Colon Cancer Treatment Options
There are three standard colon cancer treatment options: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy. Learn more about each treatment option.
Overview of Colon Cancer Surgery
Colon surgery is the most common treatment for colon cancer. In ideal situations, a doctor can use a colonoscope to remove the cancer. Most of the time however, colon surgery (usually a resection) is required.
Overview of Chemotherapy for Colon Cancer
Chemotherapy literally means "chemical treatment" and is one method doctors use to kill cancer cells and prevent them from reproducing. Chemotherapy is sometimes recommended for stage 2 colon cancer, and usually recommended for stage 3 and stage 4 colon cancer.
Radiation Therapy for Colon Cancer
Colon cancer patients may receive radiation therapy before surgery to shrink the tumor, after surgery to help prevent the tumor from coming back, or instead of surgery to destroy cancer cells in tumors that can't be surgically removed. External radiation is the most common type used in colon cancer treatment.
