Chemotherapy Research

Sometimes, people who are receiving chemotherapy for colon cancer want to explore the research a bit to see if there's anything else that may work better for them. If you see research here that may be relevant to your treatment regimen, feel free to print the article and discuss it with your doctor.
Adding Avastin May Add Years to Your Life
A study presented at the 40th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology found that colon cancer patients who added Avastin to their chemotherapy regimen fared better than those who used the standard regimen alone.
Adding Camptosar May Benefit Colon Cancer Patients
Camptosar is the brand name for irinotecan, a chemotherapeutic agent. Researchers found that adding Camptosar to the standard chemotherapy regimen may increase the disease-free survival of patients with stage 2 or stage 3 colon cancer.
Avastin Slows Growth of Colon Cancer
According to Medscape, research presented at the 2007 Gastrointestinal Cancer Symposium in Orlando, Florida, determined that when Avastin (bevacizumab) was added to the chemotherapy regimen of people with metastatic colon cancer, their tumors took longer to progress.
Blood Test May Help Choose Best Candidates for FOLFIRI Regimen
Research published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that a simple blood test may soon be able to tell doctors who'll benefit from FOLFIRI chemotherapy and who should try a different therapy. FOLFIRI is one of the standard first-line treatments for colon cancer and is a combination of three drugs: Camptosar (irinotecan), Adrucil (fluorouracil), and Leucovorin (leucovorin).
Chemo and Radiation Before Surgery Help Keep Rectal Cancer from Coming Back
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients with stage 2 or stage 3 rectal cancer who received chemotherapy and radiation before surgery were less likely to have a recurrence than patients who received chemo and radiation after surgery.
Chemoradiation Before Surgery Instead of After?
The standard therapy for people with locally-advanced rectal cancer is to receive chemo and radiation after surgery. But, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that receiving chemoradiation before surgery may be better for patients.
Chinese Herbal Medicine for Nausea
The Annals of Oncology published research that sought to determine if Chinese herbal medicine could alleviate chemotherapy toxicity and nausea.
FOLFOX4 Drug Combo Proven Effective
Preliminary results from a clinical trial indicated that the combination of FOLFOX4 and Avastin helped people with advanced colorectal cancer live longer than FOLFOX4 alone.
FOLFOX4 Plus Avastin: Worth a Try?
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania may have found new hope for patients with previously-treated advanced metastatic colorectal cancer. The treatment involves a chemotherapeutic regimen called FOLFOX4.
Importance of Completing Adjuvant Chemotherapy
A study published in the British Journal of Cancer found that failing to complete adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with adverse survival in people with stage 3 colon cancer. "Adjuvant" means the chemotherapy is administered after the tumor is removed.
Is FOLFOX4 for You?
Researchers from Hopital Saint Antoine in Paris found that adding Eloxatin to standard chemotherapy increased the survival of colon cancer patients. The treatment regimen is called FOLFOX4.
Kidney Failure: A Potential Side Effect of Avastin?
Some research has shown that adding Avastin to a chemotherapy regimen can help people with advanced colorectal cancer live longer. However, Avastin's manufacturer has issued warnings about certain risks associated with the drugm and a study published in the The Annals of Pharmacotherapy reported another potential side effect: kidney failure.
Muscle Mass Decreases Side Effects of Adrucil in Select Colon Cancer Patients
In this study, researchers examined the impact that lean body mass has on the occurrence of side effects from chemotherapy in people with stage 2 or stage 3 colon cancer. Lean body mass basically indicates how much of you is muscle and how much is fat.
Potential Treatment for Erbitux Rashes
Many colon cancer patients receive chemotherapy regimens that contain Erbitux. A common side effect of this drug is an acne-like skin rash that is uncomfortable for patients and can be severe enough to stop treatment. Fortunately, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology identified a treatment for Erbitux rashes.
Potential Treatment for Neuropathy Caused by Eloxatin
Neuropathy can result in mild to severe nerve pain and is a common side effect of Eloxatin. A study published in The Oncologist suggested that oral glutamine may be a useful neuropathy treatment. This is good news since neuropathy is generally relieved by reducing the dosage of Eloxatin.
Taking Eloxatin? Keep an Eye on Your Eyes
A study published in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery discussed an uncommon side effect of treatment with Eloxatin: cicatricial ectropion. Yeah, it didn't mean anything to me either until I looked it up.
