Definition: Large intestine is another word used to describe the colon. The large intestine, or colon, is an important part of the digestive system, which is also called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The large intestine has a major role in absorbing nutrients, minerals, and water into the body. The large intestine also helps rid the body of waste in the form of stool. The "large" in large intestine refers to the diameter (width) of the intestine, rather than the length. The large intestine is approximately six feet in length, while the small intestine is much longer, at approximately 21 feet. The last six inches or so of the large intestine are called the rectum and the anal canal.
