Definition: Lymph nodes are small round glands located throughout the body, which are part of the immune system. They filter lymph fluid to remove viruses, bacteria, cancer cells, and other foreign particles. In order to determine whether or not your cancer has spread beyond its original location, a process called staging, your doctor may remove lymph nodes during surgery in a procedure called lymph node resection or dissection.
