When choosing a colon surgeon, it's important to determine which doctors accept your health insurance. This may not be an issue for people who can afford to pay out of pocket or who are uninsured and are forced to do so. However, for most people, whether a doctor accepts their insurance plan is a major factor in choosing a colon surgeon.

The fastest way to find out which doctors accept your insurance is to use the provider directory on your insurance provider's website. Most insurance companies allow you to search by name or specialty. Using the provider directory will allow you to filter out some doctors and may add others you haven't considered to your list.

Other ways to get this information include calling your insurance company and asking which doctors are covered, using the printed provider directory that many insurance companies mail each year, or calling the doctors on your list directly.
