Colorectal Cancer 101

If you're looking for general information about colorectal cancer but aren't sure where to start, you've come to the right place. This category provides basic information about colorectal cancer and links to more detailed information.
What is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the colon or rectum. When diagnosed early, 90% of colorectal cancers are completely curable. And yet, more lives are lost each year in the U.S. to colorectal cancer than to breast cancer and AIDS combined. This colorectal cancer overview is a great place to learn about colorectal cancer symptoms, causes, stages, and treatment options.
Colorectal Cancer Reading List
I've compiled this reading list because good books are a great coping mechanism. You can learn about others' pain, confusion, fear, relief, and joy; learn from others' mistakes and successes. And you can usually do it without spending much money. This reading list is comprised of books I would recommend to a friend or loved one coping with colorectal cancer.
Anatomy of the Large Intestine
The main components of the large intestine include the cecum, appendix, colon, rectum, anus, and anal canal. The main function of the large intestine is to transport waste out of the body and to absorb water from the waste before it leaves.
Colon Anatomy (Cross Section)
The colon is about six feet long and is the part of the body's digestive system that moves waste material from the small intestine to the rectum. The colon is comprised of four distinct layers: the mucosa, the submucosa, the muscularis externis, and the serosa. Learn more about each in this colon anatomy gallery.
Top Colon Cancer Blogs
Cancer blogs are a great way to stay informed about colon cancer and to learn about others' experiences with the disease. Some cancer blogs (like mine) are written by patient advocates. Others, like most of the cancer blogs recommended here, are written by people who use the blog to discuss their personal experiences.
Top 9 Cancer Memoirs
Cancer memoirs are an excellent source of emotional support for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers. These are my top choices for cancer memoirs that are entertaining and insightful.
Free Educational Materials
Here you'll find free materials designed to educate people about colorectal cancer and related issues. You can print most of the brochures and fact sheets right from your computer. Materials you can't print, like posters and CD-ROMs, will be mailed free of charge.
Donating to Combined Federal Campaign Charities
One of the most frustrating things in life is wanting to help and feeling like you can't. Serious illnesses puncuate that frustration like few other things can. Donating to a worthy cause is one way to quell the feelings of helpnesses that often accompany the loss of a loved one, or the inability to help a particular person as much as we wish we could.
